Material Matters Family Fun Day!

FAMILY FUN DAY 17 FEBRUARY

Last month we held a family fun day, getting children to explore and learn about Material Matters! Families got involved with arts and craft activities by following a trail around the exhibition, stopping off in our seminar rooms to make origami, do colouring in, and answer questions. The final stop on the trail was the Courtauld student café, where Zoe spent the day face painting and helping the children make kaleidoscopes in a focused workshop. Hopefully everybody who visited us enjoyed themselves as much as the EWX team did! Here are some photos from an activity that involved trying on our own ‘headism’ creations, inspired by Philip Levine!

Material Matters Artist Talk: Philip Levine

EWX is pleased to announce the latest in our Material Insights talks with artist Philip Levine!

Philip mesmerised visitors at our opening nights last year by becoming a living sculpture. Using his head as his canvas, this inventive and unique approach sees Philip literally embodying his art. Philip will be discussing the boundaries between still and interactive art and how this interactivity relates to the concept of the gallery show.

EWX Artists: Rosalind Davis

Rosalind’s mixed media pieces blend the urbanity of landscape with the craft of embroidery, paint and print creating a wildly textured and mutli-layered effect of compositional intrigue.

“The stitches and brushstrokes seek to transform and repair the failing of modernity, it is a reparative gesture. The use of it challenges perceptions about what is valuable in society.”

Rosalind Davis in conversation with EWX

Philip Levine Discusses His Material Matters…

“When I looked into the mirror I realised I could use my head as a canvas…”

EWX’s Philip Levine displays the dazzling headpiece created out of 1000 swarovski crystals that he showed off as a living sculpture on our opening night. (From The Guardian’s Weekender feature on Philip, found here)

EWX Artists: Simon Edmondson

“The reality of life is the subject of the works of Simon Edmondson. A dual reality: the knowable and the unknowable; or the close and the distant, which are somehow unified in a single personal vision.” (From Simon Edmondson’s press statement)
